GEAR Is...
Adventure races combine several physical disciplines (for example, canoeing, biking, and running), can include mystery challenges (puzzles, physical challenges, etc.), and are usually completed by teams of 2-4 racers. Races can range from covering 15-20 miles over several hours to extreme races that cover 200-300 miles over several days.
Our adventure race features three different courses, providing challenges for competitors of all abilities!
- Our Go Easy course will consist of 1/2-1 mile of canoeing, 1/2-1 mile of running/walking and 3-4 miles of off and on road biking.
- Our Go Energetic course will consist of 2-3 miles of canoeing, 2-3 miles of running and 8-10 miles of off and on road biking.
- Our Go Extreme course will consist of 3-4 miles of canoeing, 4-5 miles of running and 10-12 miles of off- and on-road biking.
GEAR is a fundraising event for the Health Initiative. We are a small non-profit community organization working to reduce chronic disease among county residents. We rely on grant funding and donations to support our work.
In addition to entry fees, teams have the option to raise additional funds by asking friends, family and businesses to sponsor them. In 2009 our teams raised over $2,000 on top of their entry fees.
While this is an important fundraiser for us, no team should feel obligated to raise additional funds. Another important purpose of this race is to promote physical activity and the natural resources available in St. Lawrence County. So just by participating, teams are helping us achieve our mission! With that said, however, we do offer a great prize package (heart rate monitors last year!) for the team that raises the most money!
We have compiled a fundraising packet to help teams get started; download it by clicking on the Fundraising Packet tab under Forms in the GEAR 2010 menu.
Friends and family will also be able to donate directly through this website after teams are registered.
Teams can be 2 people, 3 people or a family team of up to six! All teams can be single gender or co-ed and at least one member has to be 18 years of age or older. Family teams must have at least one member aged 18 or older for every two children under the age of 14.
The course location for GEAR changes every year but it is always within St. Lawrence County. The race may expose you to areas of the county you've never seen and new recreational possibilities for your regular enjoyment!
