Funding Available to Assist Work Sites in Making Healthy Changes
The St. Lawrence Health Initiative’s Creating Healthy Schools and Communities grant, funded by the New York State Department of Health, is recruiting work sites, municipalities, and community-based organizations interested in making healthful changes for its employees and volunteers.
Recently, the Village of Massena adopted a Healthy Worksite Policy to address nutrition and physical activity opportunities for its employees. With the adoption of a Worksite Wellness Policy, the Village of Massena was eligible for funding from the Health Initiative to purchase appliances for its breakroom, as well as several balance ball chairs.
“The balance ball chair we received from the Health Initiative’s grant has helped me considerably with my back and it forces me to practice better posture. I would definitely recommend this chair to others.” said Lisa Tyo, Village of Massena employee. Other employees noted that due to not having the proper facilities to store and prepare food, they typically made unhealthy lunch and snack choices. With the new refrigerator and toaster oven, they are able to pack and bring healthier foods from home.
